Environmental consulting is frequently used for testing and regulating compliance; the environmental consultant guides a client to stay within the guidelines of environmental compliance and regulation. While a wide spectrum of specializations exist within the industry, environmental consultants generally enter the field from either the environmental side, or the industry side.
Environmental consultants perform a wide range of activities for their clients. Environmental consultants may specialize in certain parts of the industry like soil contamination, or may provide environmental consulting services across a wide array of disciplines. For example environmental consultants may perform due diligence reports for clients to predict and prevent certain sanctions or could provide construction services like lead hazard inspections or asbestos testing.
Environmental consultants should possess deep knowledge on environmental compliance, which they may use to advise clients in the public or private industry to help them prevent possible legal action, fines, or poor environmental/business decisions. Environmental Consultants often have an undergraduate degree and occasionally a masters in Environmental Science, Engineering, or some other science specialization.
Perhaps the most basic field within which environmental consulting remains prominent is the commercial real estate market. Commercial lenders may rely on both big and small environmental consulting firms to inspect properties prior to purchase. Banks aim to prevent loaning money to borrowers if there is an environmental concern with the property that could prevent the borrowers from paying back the loan. When an environmental issue is discovered, property owners that are responsible will likely reserve money in escrow to repair and prevent the environmental impact.
The environmental consulting field is expected to grow rapidly in the coming years and decades. As more and more environmental threats are discovered and regulated, the need and value of skilled consultants to guide private and public industry will increase.
